Music Industry

Music Industry Operations: Music Publishing

Final Project: A series of small articles that give young, at-home producers an overview of copyright and music publishing geared towards situations they will face in their work. These articles will be placed on my website www.recordschool.com.

Objective: The next generation of producers have found great strength in their audio software. Any high school student with some generous Christmas gifts or a summer job can have the equipment needed to “produce” songs. This definition of “produce” is very different from the standard industry meaning, and for these young students, the music they are producing is quite often music they are writing. The majority of these students have no knowledge of their copyright rights, or even what a music publisher is. My goal is to help educate them so that they may get the most out of their blossoming talent. The articles will be broken up into the following categories:

What is a Copyright and why do I need one?

What type of Copyright do I need?

How do I get a Copyright?

What are Music Publishers and Performance Right Societies?

I want to Sample music. What are my legal rights?

How can I promote my songs?

              Suggested Reading List

              Suggested Websites

These articles will be placed on a website with a database of schools offering programs in music production and engineering. The usual visitors to this website are younger producers looking to get serious about their education. The drive that brings them to the website will feed their interest in these key copyright topics.
